I have just bought a SATA 80GB hard drive to use an external mass storage device. I also bought a SATA to USB enclosure. Installed it onto the computer without problem - I am using Win XP so no need for a driver installation. Win XP successfully installed the hard drive however I cannot see it in 'my computer.'
I have recently done the same opn an old IDE drive (10GB) without problem.
Can someone please tell me how to access the drive so I can format it and start using it.
Maybe I have used all the USB ports on other hard ware. I dont know.
Cheers

click on the start button, then right clikc on my computer and select manage.

This will bring up computer management, in the left column under storage select disk management. This will bring up a list of drives and should show your new one too. Right click on it and select format, once done it should appear, if not ensure that it has a drive letter assigned

Thanks for the reply but the hard drive does not appear on the disk management system - any other ideas? Not sure how to assign a drive letter

First you have to see the actual drive first. You have to see the drive listed in the device list before you can assign it a drive letter. You should install your drivers, SATA needs drivers, I find that Vista installed it automatically when you first boot up with your hard drive, but then if it failed to load the drivers you can get manually install them. There should be SATA drivers for your motherboard on your motherboard manufacturer's website.
