hi

recently my laptop stopped connecting to my router. i can connect to other networks and other people can connect to my network. i've tried resetting the router and using the diagnose and repair thing but nothing works.

can somebody guide me through the process of diagnosing the problem and fixing it?

What kind of router?
What is your Operating System (Vista, XP, Win7, Win8)?

When you say "I can connect to other networks", can you be more specific? You mean that your computer can connect to another network, that is using a different router?

And...other computers can connect to your network without a problem?

Make sure your computers IP address is not already in use. Are you using DHCP to assign IP's to your devices, or are you doing it manually (static)?

Confirm that your computers gateway address is the same as your routers IP address.

Since you can connect to other networks, I assume, and if I understand your post correctly, other computers can connect to your network, it sounds like you are using DHCP. Therefore, an IP conflict is unlikely.

Can you access your routers settings?

Until we have more info, we are kinda at a standstill. More info means more possible solutions.

Thanks
Donald

I'm using windows 7

i mean i can connect to my neighbours unsecured network

yes other peoples computers can connect without a problem

i'm using dhcp. i don't know the ip adress of any of the other computers on the network

i don't know how to confirm the gateway adress or the routers ip address

i dont know how to access the router settings. the router is a tp link

sorry for being so vague. i just didn't know what info you would need

Ok, I will try to explain/help the best I can.

Don't type any of the quotes I use.

Click the Start Button---->then type "cmd" and hit enter

This will open up the CLI (command line interface).

Type in "ipconfig"

This will bring up the connection settings for the computer you are on.
Look for the "IPv4" Ip address....this is your computers IP address. What is it?

Next, look for the gateway address. What is it? This address should be the same as your Routers IP address. We will get to that....

Last, the look for the 'subnet mask'. What is it?

The router login/setup page for TP-Link routers should be accessible to your computer. You may need to hardwire the computer to the router (ethernet) to access this page. You will need to type in the routers IP address (aka - your computers gateway address). The default for TP Link routers is "192.168.1.1"

Try typing that IP into your internet address bar. What happens?

i did the ipconfig thing but can't see the ipv4 number. everything just says media disconnected. i presume this is because that computer can't connect to the network. did you mean for me to do it on a working computer? if so the working one i am using is running windows 8 incase that makes any difference

Do all this on the "problem computer" and a known working computer (network connected)

Click on the signal bars on your task bar.
Then click on “Open Network and Sharing Center”
Next, click on “Manage Wireless Networks” --- Do you see your network in the list?

If you are seeing a Media Disconnected, your network adapter may not be turned on, or disabled, or even disconnected.

Open the NETWORK SHARING CENTER again, this time click on "Change Adapter Settings"
What do you see?

Can you take a screenshot of any of this and post it?

yes my network is listed

in the 'change adapter settings' part there are three icons:

local area connection
network cable unplugged
realtek PCIe FE Family Controller

Wireless network connection
Not connected
Atheros AR9485 802. 11b/g/n WIFI Adapter

wireless network connection 2
not connected
Microsoft Virtual WiFi miniport adapter

i might be able to post screenshots later. which part in particular?

Right click on the Atheros network connection. Does it give you the option to "Connect"? If not, then: Right click it again and click Properties, then highlight the IPv4 address and then click "properties"---located underneath

What is the IP Address, Subnet Address, and the Gateway Address?

it is set to 'obtain an IP address automatically' (DHCP?) i can select 'use the following IP address' then the 'IP address' 'subnet mask' and 'Default gateway' boxes can be written in. at the moment they are blank.

No, you want to this set to automatic, less issues that way. Look in device manager to make sure your wireless card shows drivers installed and working correctly. You might want to try uninstalling and reinstalling the drivers or delete the wireless connection for your home network and set it back up. Sometimes the network profile gets screwed and just needs to be set back up. Make sure you enter the correct security key.

Regardless, you will need an adapter that is functioning, and your laptop will need an IP. Leave it on DHCP.

Click start, type in 'device manager', click on the link, click 'view' clcik 'show hidden devices', double click the 'network adapters', then right click on the Atheros adapter. Next click properties and click the driver tab. Make sure the device is 'enabled', then click 'update driver'. This will make sure everything is current. Once this adapter is enabled and updated, it should be able to connect to the network. Let me know what happens.

ok i checked the driver is enabled. i tried to update but it said that it is already up to date. however i presume this is becuase it can't connect to the internet to check for newer versions. the current version installed is 9.2.0.444

i googled the driver and found this: http://www.atheros.cz/atheros-wireless-download.php?chipset=60&system=5

should i download this on the working laptop and install it on the broken one?

if so which version do i need? there seems to be four different options?

and is there a particular place i need to put it?

Since the driver is installed, please try my suggestion of deleting the existing wireless profile for your home network and set it back up again. Go into network and sharing center, on the left hand side you will see where it says manage wireless networks. click on that and then find your network name and delete it. Then set it back up and see what happens. Again, make sure you enter the correct security key for your wireless.

ok i did as you suggested and deleted the network profile. now i can connect to the network but it is unidentified and i still can't connect to the internet

i did the diagnose and repair thing and it said 'problem with network adapter or access point'

You can try downloading the new driver and see if that helps.

Click on the green click for download box and download the zipped file. Unzip it and transfer the folder with all the files in it to your flash drive. Then insert it into the other computer and then go into device manager and update the driver manually, point the update to the folder where the files are on your flash drive and it should update.

i left the laptop on and after a while it connected so i updated the driver and now it seems to be working perfectly.

many thanks to both of you for all your help.
