I can't decide between a desktop or a laptop

I'm brand new here, I'm kind of combining the Desktop and Laptop sections, but I'm going to get a computer and I'm really stuck on this. I cannot decide whether to get a desktop or a laptop. Hopefully you guys can help me decide! :)
This is what I'll be using the computer for:
Programming/App development
Gaming [Battlefield 3, Gears of War, Portal, Skyrim, etc.]
Recording and editing Xbox gameplay (Sony Vegas/After Effects)
Standard Internet surfing
Photoshop/GIMP
Pretty much any program you can think of.
I love the mobility of a laptop but I need the power a desktop can give me. I'll build it myself.

So what do you think? Desktop or laptop?
 
Unless you can afford like a $4k super lappy tgen desktop all the way, and even then a desktop would be better because of upgradeability whereas a lappy you're stuck with what you got which even for the money couldn't max bf3 i bet
