I Can't Make My 2nd Harddisk Work as a Slave

I have 2 IDE harddisks. One of them, is connected to my PC and working. The other is one my friend gave me. When I connect the 2nd one using the free IDE port on the IDE wire that's already connected to my old Harddisk and use the CD-roms power plug to connect to the power, the PC starts, shows me the Intel Inside screen, then stops at a black screen and doesn't continue to boot. I tried switching the cables between my old Harddisk and the new one but the PC seems to insist on treating the new one as the only Harddisk installed. After the first few tries, I deleted all partitions on the new HDD. I tried again but it didn't work. What should I do to have 2 harddisks functioning at once on my system?
 
Did you set the jumpers correctly on your new HDD?
At start up, go into bios by pressing "delete" once you see maybe the intel logo or when it says "press del to enter bios". Once you enter BIOS make sure that the BIOS recognizes the HDD. You should see the HDD on the first page in BIOS. Do you?
Have you tried to put this new hard drive into another computer system to see if it worked then?
 


An example, on the back of your Hard Disc pull of the jumper link and set it to slave. It may be printed "SL" on the circuit board near the jumper pins.
 
On my harddisks, the "Jumper" has 4 pairs of pins, and I tried moving the black block, but it seems lodged in place.
 
You're going to have to take out that little "black box" (the white little box on the picture TFT showed you) Sometimes they are wedged in there. You might need a needle or paper clip to help wedge it out. Be careful not to bend any pins whiled doing so.

The black block will slide off the pins. You might need to go to Walgreens and pick up a .99 cent Tweezers to pull it out though. Your HDD should have a label on the top of the drive that tells you which pins to put the Jumper on if you want it to be a slave drive.

Mine last jumper was tough to pull out - but with some careful effort with a Tweezer - it came out. You just need to get it started.
