I dont get it!?

So I have burned a few DVD's... A few coasters too!!
Here is my question. I have used a few different programs and am testing the final result DVD onto 2 dvd players. (one is newer, plays more stuff)
I have used Nero 6 (plays on new and old DVD)
I have used U-lead Movie maker (or something like that) plays ONLY on
new player
I have used the WIN - DVD creator that cam on my PC...and it may or may not play in the old one. But ALWAYS in new.

SO what gives? I can maybe understand one program always works in one and not the other, but how come one DVD may play on the old player, and another will not..(Burned with same DVD's and SAME program?)

Using a 4x dvd, burner is 8 speed (oops when I bought) Memorex DVDs

Anyone use a program that they think is great? I have yet to find one I like! I like features on a few different ones

When you burn/make your DVD, what are the DVD specs? (i.e., resolution, framerate, audio-specs and more importantly, the bitrate). Newer players can handle out of spec or uncommon DVDs more easily. You can also try burning slower on not-so-great media (i.e., 2X)
