I fried my hard drive, i have a few questions.

i bought a new video card, i didnt realize at the time but it needed a bigger power supply. so i bought a new power supply, went to plug it up and everything. and my harddrive smoked. i plugged something extra up that shouldnt have been. so i went to the store and bought a new hard drive plugged that up correctly. now, my sound, and my ethernet port doesnt work. any ideas on whats wrong with them? and any ideas on how to fix them?

any serious answers very much appreciated.

if your hdd smoked the first time, and now the ports on the motherboard are bad, then you likely fried everything. what psu did you use (model and manufacturer)?

i'm assuming your computer boots up normally since you can tell that your ethernet and sound dont work.
if you're using XP/Vista, right click "my computer", click "manage", click on "device manager" and see if there are any yellow question marks (?). if so that means that the drivers need to be installed and its not a hardware problem. if everything looks fine there you likely fried your motherboard and it will need to be replaced.

Did you perhaps happen to have a SATA drive that has both the SATA power connector and the standard ATX power connector?

I remember reading somewhere that plugging both in at the same time can cause a very bad outcome.

thanks guys/girls

That's definitely the problem.

You're using a new hard drive, and my guess is that all you did was install windows. You also have to reinstall all of the drivers as well.

how do i reinstall all the drivers? they were all preloaded and stuff on the computer when i bought it. I went into the device manager and it says everything is working properly, which is confusing, cause it isnt. any websites that will walk me through the reinstall? or do i have to buy the driver?

driverguide.com is a really good sign up and it is a free sign up but for a certain amount of downloads. Or you could visit the manufactures websiye.
