I got a call today...

I had the day off today, and was sitting at home peacefully when I got a phone call.

I picked up, and the man on the other line had a strong Indian accent. My first reaction was that it was from a call centre, and I was getting ready to hang up when he told me that "there was a problem with my computer". This caught my interest.

He told me to go to my desktop. I said I was there. He told me to open up "Computer", and I said that I couldn't find it. He said "click on the start button". I made the illusion that I was using a Mac or Windows 8, and I couldn't find it. He called me a liar and said that I wasn't at the computer, so I quickly pulled out my iPad.

He gave me a website, and I accessed it thinking that it wouldn't give an iOS device a virus. Anyways, when I got to the website, he spent about 10 or 15 minutes giving me directions to install this software. I said that I couldn't, and eventually mentioned that I was using an iPad. He got angry and told me to log onto my desktop, which I then said was broken. He said he could fix it, and I told him "okay, the send me a new motherboard to my house for me to install. I've been thinking of putting an ASRock Extreme4 into my new build". He told me sarcastically that he'd come to my house to fix it the next day, and I finished the conversation by saying "just stop calling, and stop trying to scam people into getting access to their PCs and making them think at there's a problem". The call was interrupted by static, and he hung up.

I'm sure you all are smart enough to know NOT to install anything this guy wants you to, but just for the reference, as opposed to just hanging up when someone calls trying to get you to install "Teamviewer", as opposed to just hanging up, keep them on the line for a bit and have some fun.

Anyone have similar experiences?

Me too. One thing though. Certain phone numbers you could be charged just for staying on the phone with him. Ya might not like it. Suggest to get off and be done with it.
Thats what they do. Keep you on the line. and making money. At least this is what i seen.

Thanks for the tip. I don't know what THEY make per call, but I know that I wasn't charged. I called my service provider and they told me that I'll never be charged for incoming, telemarketer or not, unless it's a collect call.

Besides, the telemarketer seemed pretty eager to get off the call by the end. He probably thought "oh f*** it, I'll never get anything out of this guy".

Out here in Eastern England, we constantly get cold callers and the likes.

One rang up and said "Hello this is Microsoft Care! We have found errors on your computer!"

I told him I had Linux and he hung up.

Would love to get a call like that, lol. Its a bummer that some people fall for it though.

All too often I'm afraid. I don't know how many times I've got called and was told I received a phone call saying I infected and I let them have access to my pc. And I go, do you realize that the only 2 people that would know you are infected is you and your internet provider? Depending on the infection you have, I know comcast will send you an email saying you have a bot on one of your systems.

If they don't tell me who they are and what exactly they want I wouldn't be caught dead wasting my time on such a thing.

this type of call is rare. Never had one. I get calls from solicitors all the time and none stop. Im on the donotcall.gov and does nothing. They are aware of it also.

Here in Canada, apparently these calls have been quite common lately. Since almost ALL telemarketers call during that day between 9-5, this is my first time getting it. However, when I do get the day off I'm always surprised at how many calls I get, usually 3-4 telemarketers per day.

The worst offender seems to be the "This is your captain speaking" call, claiming that I've won a free cruise to the Bahamas.

I would love to get one of those calls, lol

Oh My God... If you EVER get one of those calls, you are to IMMEDIATELY begin recording, and keep him talking and do not hang up the phone until you have at least 35 minutes of audio.

And then send me the audio so I can burn it to a CD.

This would be my "Commute to work" CD, and I would never tire of it....

 :gun:
