I got a quick question about memory and my HDD.

EDIT: haha. I just realized I posted this in the wrong thread. My bad. Im tired. x3

First off. The laptop in question: acer extensa 4420-5963 vista x64. It can be upgraded to 4.28 GB. Im running 2GB right now.

I believe this memory will work, but I wanted to know if there is something faster. Its cal4 and its numbers are 4-4-4-12. I dont think I can mess with the numbers too much, seeing that my laptop is OEM. But i would like too if possible.

Mushkin (2GBx2)

Next. I have a 160GB HDD, but in DBAN, it will only recognize 149GB. the other 11GB is a hidden partition that acer, annoyingly enough, stuck in there from the factory. I just want t know the fastest way to erase that partition.

I read up on CPU's and such. Im thinking my tk-57's are performing well above there "factory" set clocking. I'll check just to be sure, but vista boots in about 30 seconds, which is kinda stupid fast for a 2.0GHz duel core AMD X2

I also wanted to know if my motherboard bios could change some of the settings for my ram. Its a phoenix oem bios, so im not sure if I could or not. Or rather, I dont know the function key to hit.

Not sure where you got 4.28GB, but yeah, that 2x2GB kit should work just fine

As for the HD, that's normal. It's called marketing. Essentially they say 1 byte = 1000 kilobyte, then the OS registered 1 byte = 1024 kilobytes. (160*1000^3)/(1024^3) = 149.012GB. Back in the day when drives were only a few gigs, it was hardly noticeable. But now you're loosing...well as you see, a good chunk of your drive. Both of my 160's register as 149GB and my 500 registers as 465GB.

haha. so your saying they ESTIMATE the drive size. not the actual size. so that would be why i see HDD's with different sizes, even though they say there the same size. Like my 1TB drive is 931. figures. I just thought 11Gigs was too big to "estimate"

As far as the 4.28gbs. i got that wrong. its 4028. which... 28m is beans. But is that ram in the link about as good as I would need or is there something that would be better? I run video conversion and other ram intensive programs.

Hmm... I guess you could say they estimate it... But look at any hard drive box and you'll find something like this...

one megabyte (MB) = one million bytes, one gigabyte (GB) = one billion bytes, and one terabyte (TB) = one trillion bytes. Total accessible capacity varies depending on operating environment

Which all this is just a way for them to charge more for less. Eventually, it's going to catch up to manufactures though.

As for the RAM, I'm sure it'll be fine. Speeds look fine and it really doesn't make that much of a difference if you were to find some faster or even a bit slower.

yeah. especially when the computer world get petabyte HDD's which is still a god ways into the future im sure.

Yeah. so basically, your saying that 1GB is generally accepted as 1000mb, but that your computer sees it as less, depending on the hardware/os..... makes sense.

About the memory, ill just buy those for now. I plan on building my own laptop in the near future anyway. ive only been in computers for about a year and I just started seriously looking at hardware. Up until now Ive been doing just software related issues. But hardware really isnt hard to learn. I knew about the drive not showing up as the actual size, but I didnt realize that it was that big a percentage.... AKA: I never bothered to ask lol

Thx for the help. I'll probly be lurking around the forums from time to time.

Laterz
