When I boot it in safe mode it loads the list of files but that's it. It doesn't start. When I try the instalation disk, it doesn't show the 'choose your language' menu. It seems like it's delayed as well. Like it will take a few seconds before even trying to get it to boot into safe mode. Stuck!
I have a dell inspiron 530 and it won't get past the startup bar.

I wonder if it's the RAM. Try one stick. Could be the HDD as well.
The disk works when the HDD isn't attached. What do you think about that?

Yeah it's probably a faulty hard drive. Try pressing F12 on boot, then select Diagnostics.
