I have a major problem!

Last night I installed norton antivirus on my moms computer and the install went smooth, but before I left I started a full system scan and this morning when I went back all I seen was a black screen, so I tried to reboot it and it would not work! I get something that comes up saying <windows root> \ system 32\ntoskrnl.exe file missing or corrupt...what happend? Did norton find a virus on a system file and delete it? Is there anyway to replace this file, I cant even boot into safe mode and I have tried to boot into the option of (last known good configuration) and I get the same message! She does not have a system restore disk what else are my options? Someone please help!
 
Looks like Norton screwed up. I think the only way to fix it is with a repair from a windows disc. Can you borrow a disc off someone? As long as you use your cd key it's legit.
 
I don't think you need to save anything with a repair, it'll all still be there, but wait for someone else to confirm all this.
 
I think you'd better post what system it is, then someone can advise you on what to do, not really my area.
 
ahh this ntoskrnl.exe comes up a lot actually, try the following

1. Insert the Microsoft Windows XP CD. Note: If you have a recovery CD or a restore CD and not a Microsoft Windows XP CD it is likely the below steps will not resolve your issue.
2. Reboot the computer, as the computer is starting you should see a message to press any key to boot from the CD. When you see this message press any key.
3. In the Microsoft Windows XP setup menu press the R key to enter the recovery console.
4. Select the operating system you wish to fix, and then enter the administrator password.
5. Type expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\windows\system32
6. You will then be prompted if you wish to overwrite the file type Y and press enter to overwrite the file.
7. Type exit to reboot the computer.
 
Will I be able to do this with any window xp cd? Windows was preloaded on computer when new and there is no recovery disk but my friend has an xp disk I can use, would that work?
 
should be ok,
as a side note, make sure you have you cd key that was used to install your xp onto your machine (it usually a little sticer), you wont need it for the process i suggested but its always good to know it (if you dont have one then complain to the place you bought)
