if i burn ubuntu onto a dvd can i just run it from the cd as in not have to partition/install? i was just going to use it to boot up my new system until i purchase windows but i don't want to do it if i have to install it onto my hdd and then format it to install windows....too complicating for me :P

Yes you can run Ubuntu as a Live CD. Just make sure you download the image file that contains the Live CD as well as the install :). Then when you pop the CD into your CD-Drive, follow the instructions given upon boot to load the Live CD.

Breaks.

sweet, will i be able to use internet? i will have this system on wireless but i think it needs the software to log into my wireless modem

Well unfortunately wireless is still something I have no familiarity with. It picks up my wired ethernet connection to my router immediately without me having to customise a thing. I'm sure it also caters for wireless although don't quote me on that as I'm not 100% sure. Best bet would be to try it and find out. It won't harm anything in seeing as you will be booting from CD won't you :).

It's definitely worth giving their support forums a quick browse / search for wireless help as I'm sure this has cropped up a million times before on there and the best place to get advice / help on this would be straight from the horses mouth.

Thanks man, yeah thats what ill do so i wont have to format the drive before insalling windows...thanks.
oh one more thing, i heard that iso files got to be burned throught Nero? i have sonic

Well .iso files don't have to be burnt through Nero. Most other burning applications should account for .iso burning also (alcohol 120% etc etc). Just browse around your burner software menu and look for the option to 'Burn Image File'. The only reason most people suggest Nero is because it's one of the most used pieces of software for burning anything onto CD / DVD and because it's fairly easy to use. But yes, I can't recall whether or not Sonic has the image file burning facility. If not, then you know what will be recommended.

Remember, with the Live CD, you cant install anything, you cant install drivers, etc. And it is really slow since it has to load everthing from the CD. Just so you know.

Ok i need help, i cant get my computer to boot from CD....i hit f1 to continue then it says boot from CD:, but it comes up and says Media test failed, check cables?? or did i burn the iso wrong? im confused
Edit: if i let it go it says "Disk boot error, insert system disk and press enter"
Im going to try burning it with active iso burner
