I have a virus? Where is it?

A few days ago, I got a popup on my computer about some virus. I told it to put it in the vault, then I ran a scan, finding nothing. Today, I got another dialog around the same time(3pm or so) I was resting and by the time I got up it had already taken action and done something(deleted it I assume as nothing was in the vault) Ran anothe scan to find nothing...

I use AVG Free Edition. I didn't catch what the virus was, but it said some trojan. I think it was in some temp/cache folder. Kinda odd because I don't use IE and I have Firefox to erase the cache when I close. No recent installs that I can recall either...

The machine is running XP Pro, very recent intall. It's my laptop so I'm very careful about what I install, where I go, etc(so it'll always work for me!) Ideas?

Try checking the startup items through the msconfig command and see if there is anything strange loading at startup or not. If there was, dig after it and get the path of the file, and see how you can delete it directly. I usually do this with worms and trojans.

maybe it would help if he knew what the start up programs are.....whats the command to take you to that program tha tells you what each start up does/description..and the ability to turn on/off.restart?

I agree with Narafa (when do I not) use msconfig and look for any stranges files. Most adware and spyware are not detectable by system scans.
If you have got some strange in your start-up list find it and delete it

Symantec has good detection, but last time i checked they and McAfee online were scan only, no cleaning/delete options were available. They may have changed... I haven't checked in a while  I do know that trend and panda do offer cleaning/deleting of infected stuff however. :)

Trying to run an online scan now. I'm at school and the net really sucks here.

It's nothing in the startup as I just cleaned it out yesterday. Not that I have anything there. Just something for adobe, AVG, and dumprep O.o I don't remember that being there. Well my machine has been acting up just now so maybe this was something XP put there as it is relating to XP as from what I read...
