I have no clue what happened here? What do I replace?

This, my good friends, is going to be a good read. I don't know what the heck happened here, but, man, this is freaking me out.

My dad's computer is about four years old, he bought it at a local computer shop. It worked fine before this, but, now I have no idea what has happened.

It all started when he was on his computer doing normal things, and, then the computer just rebooted. He checked the computer for viruses spyware, the works... Nothing....

So, the problem keeps happening, he thinks it's the hard drive because windows checkdisk keeps finding problems with it. So, he went out and bought a 250GB maxtor hard drive. Upon installing it and trying to put XP on it, we kept running into the same problem. The computer would restart, for no reason at all. We could never get past the partitioning screen.

So, after figuring that it wasn't the hard drive (which the IT guy at his work really thought it was) we were out, and, happened to see a computer on the side of the road (it looked like it may be some windows 98 machine...), so we grabbed it to see if there was any good ram in it or somthing, and when we got back, we decided to plug the 2.5GB hard drive with windows 98 into his computer and see what happened. Sure enough, the windows 98 hard drive booted, and was almost a clean install of windows (no files or anything), there was a few viruses and stuff on it, but, after 10 minutes of cleaning, they were all gone. Now, this is the funny part, I have loaded all loads of drivers for his computer onto the 98 hard drive, and have his usb hard drive plugged into it, and, it is running fine! It's been going for two days and is doing fine! I'm writing this on it now! But, if I plug in either of his other two hard drives back in, 5 minutes in windows tops! If you can get into windows that is.... He thinks that there is a motherboard problem, I personally have not clue.... What do you guys think?

The computer is as follows:
-Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
-40GB Maxtor hard drive
-768MB DDR 400 Ram
-ATI Radeon 7500
-Pentium 4 1.66GHZ
-Intel 845 Chipset
-Some Gigabyte Motherboard I can't find the model number for (if needed I will get it)

He's going to go out and buy a new motherboard and processor. Is this the right thing to do?

Thanks,
