I have to revert back to Windows 8.1. Problems I encountered with Windows 10

I have to restore from my image file (thank God, I have one) after spending 36 hours with W10.

The installation went without a glitch and I like the new interface a lot. Some need getting use to like Control Panel is hidden, or printer setting is not in the start menu. The search was not as smart as Windows 8.1 but still would work.

But once I settled in and starting using my applications, I have major problems.

Problem with Windows 10

  • Impossible to transfer files from one network computer to another.
  • I have multiple computers in the network and I share files with. When I copied the files from another machine to the W10 machines. I cannot save or edit the files in W10. There is security issues and also folder issues. That is a big no no for me.

  • Epson scanner update not working at all. Epson does not have a W10 driver for the V30 (too old?)

  • The Epson printer and scanner app in MS Store does not recognize the scanner.

  • MS Edge would not allow changing default search engine to Google.

  • Cannot turn Cortana on.

  • Control Panel is there, but hidden.

  • Printer setting is buried in Control Panel.
If anyone has some insight to these problems, please share.
Thanks.

At work I have a desktop and laptop both on Windows 10. I have a folder on my laptop mapped to a drive letter on the desktop. I can transfer files with no issues.
More info about that would be nice.

According to the Epson website, you should be able to use this driver:
http://www.epson.com/cgi-bin/Store/...doid=63081039&infoType=Downloads&platform=All

To change your search engine in Edge, go to google.com, open the options (...) > Settings > View advanced settings > Search in the address bar with > Add new > Select google.com > Add as default

Cortana seems to just be "on" for me when I press Windows Key + S. From there you can set it up.

For quick access to the control panel, press Windows key + X. This little menu has a lot of useful links

The problem with file transferred from Win 7 . . .
I have two machines hooked up as home group network sharing. I transferred files back and forth and there was no problem.
After I updated to W10, the file I transferred from the W7 machines had the following problems.
The Access file is opened in read only mode. So when my VBA routine tried to update the file, it bombed. I guess it has something to do with the write right and the ownership issues like the Excel file.
The Excel (2007) file opens OK. But when I tried to save it, it would not save. The security was limited in W10. The detail properties show that I don't have the write right and that the owner of the file was the W7 computer.
The work around is to save it under another name. Add the W10 user as the owner. Then delete the original file, then rename the the newly saved file to the original's name. A pain!

The epson link was exactly what I downloaded. It was from 2009. How could they write driver for Windows 10 then.
The problem I had with that installation is that in the middle of the installation, it changed into Minolta Dimage Scanner, which I had before, but I had deleted. I don't know if Epson is related to Minolta Dimage. But when it is done, it put Minolta Dimage on my start menu. When I clicked on it, I got error on the easy scanner and utility.

After having some time to think over my problems, I wonder if the upgrade to W10 changed the network sharing properties which I set in Win 8.1.

If I examine the network sharing properties after the upgrade, I wonder if it would solve the problem with the file transfer.

Now that I had upgraded and then revert back to W8, can I go back to the MS site and download the upgrade again?

As for the Epson scanner issues, I can run the scanner in the W7 machine until Epson comes thru.

OK. The icon inviting me to update to W10 showed up again and I reserved it again. So, I think the update question is answered.

I am still awaiting some of you Guru's insight on the network sharing properties issue. Or would you suggest other place to post this questions?

As in what way? Just pick if you want 32 or 64. Download the tool. When you run it, it will give you the option of upgrading or making a Windows 10 ISO to do a clean install.

I did both, upgraded and did the ISO download so I would have a copy to do a clean install in the future. Do the upgrade first from your 7 or 8 so microshat can verify your pin and activate it. Then later if you want you can do a clean install you have the ISO.

On the upgrade it could have set everything back to default.

I reserved the upgrade and got a pop up saying it is ready.
I started the upgrade and I went to bed. Didn't want to sit there for hours.
The next morning, everything was up and running and it was on W10.
So, I don't know what the inter-acting in updating.
I don't recall it ask me for any pin.
