As a student at college where the residential internet guys are psyco about no wireless in the dorms, I was wondering if by connecting to the internet with my ethernet cable in the dorm if they can monitor my activity (ie. file sharing and/or personal stuff). I am kind of scared cuz the ResNet guys here are nazis and I don't want to be expelled for downloading music etc... or surfing sites about how to make bombs (jk) thx

yes, you are getting an IP from their network. If you're on the college LAN, assuming the popular file sharing ports aren't already blocked, I'm sure they are monitored, or can be if there's reason to.

I've said it once and i'll say it again, it is illegal for anyone to monitor your internet activity, whether you are on there network or not. They CAN monitor traffic amounts and the ports you're using to pick up if you're p2p'ing. They cannot review the web pages that you have visited without your permission. Now whether or not they obide by this is up to them.

so if they do monitor it, and report you, then you can come right back at them.
Thats only if the monitors go to rissrukrib about it first. If they go to their superiors then rissrukrib and the monitors would be in trouble. This is a catch 22 scenrio
