I need a cheap PSU

I need to be able to run an 8600 a pentium d 945, and that's about it. I don't think the 300w PSU this compaq came with is going to cut it. I want it to be as cheap as possible, and that's about it.

Bear in mind that a cheapass "600w" psu will pump out about as much current as an expensive 400w psu

its the total current on the +12v rails that matters with relation to video cards. You need 24a minimum and a 350w+ PSU.

that one above has 2x18a rails so should be fine

Its 550w, it's rosewill which is a credible name, it has good reviews, and its originally a $70.00 PSU. For what he needs it will certainly do the job.

Last year I has a 650w Rosewill PSU die on me. As it was dying my voltages went all over the place and it ended up killing my motherboard, video card, RAM and CPU.

IMO, a good power supply is one of the most important components in your system. I may have saved $60 on that Rosewill PSU, but it ended up costing me several hundred dollars in replacement parts.

There is alot of P/S I would look at instead of a Rosewill.

Hi thermophilis
cheap power supplys are never the best to buy, their rated wattage is never correct
a cheap 400watt power supply will never give you a total power output of 400watt,probally around 300 to 350watt if your lucky
go for a named brand such as enermax, ocz or thermaltake, you may pay £20 more but it will supply your p.c,s components with the power they need, especially when running gfx cards like the geforce 8600
before you buy your new psu use the excellent "power supply calculator" at http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp
enter your pc,s components including usb port, and any modding you have added(cold cathod tubes,80mm fans ect) and click the "calculate" link, this will give you a idea of the amount of power(in watts) your p.c will require
you may be suprised at the amount your pc needs, even with 2x sata hdd and 2 x optical drives my pc uses just 229watts of power
hope this helps.any problems let me know
good luck mate
