i need help connecting tv to monitor

i have a sony bravia KDL-42V4100 and i want to hook my laptop up to it. My laptop is a thinkpad t61 with vista. i thought it would be simple like hooking up my monitor to it. I am using the plain old vga cord. I cant get it to work. When i have it switch monitors the tv says "unsupported signal, please check the device output." i have tried switching resolutions and such, nothing works. I tried my dads laptop, an hp xp system and it worked flawlessly. i also made sure that my laptop was outputting right and it always works with my 19 inch acer monitor. o yeah it worked once,
how can i make it work!?!?!?
 
This won't help you fix your problem, but my bro couldn't get his Vista laptop to work on his Samsung telly with VGA, whereas my XP laptop worked fine. Maybe a Vista prob...!?!
