I am running Windows Vista 32 bit, (E5200 CPU and 4850 graphics card)... I just downloaded Blender 2.48a for windows and Python 2.54 but when I try to open Blender it crashes and tells me that "blender.exe has stopped working".

Does anyone have any idea what could be the problem?

I experienced this before with different software. After I reinstall windows and install that software again, its working. I think it was the OS problem. There something wrong with windows component and too bad I cannot figure what the problem is.

Blender is fully compatible with Vista... you may want to try reinstalling your GPU's drivers as that might have something to do with the problem.

ATI drivers suck !

To fix my problem I just had to revert back to catalyst 8.11 (the 2nd newest driver), hope I don't loose fps because of that.

Catalyst isn't all that bad and I haven't had any issues with version 8.12, but then I've only used 3D software in Linux, not Windows.

I RMAd my motherboard and gfx card...and im still having problems :(

I think all I can do know is re-install my OS and see what happens
