I need help to fix girlfriends laptop

Hello,

My girlfriends laptop gave up the ghost month ago and I thought I'd have a go at fixing it.

It's an Advent ERT2250.

The problem is that it won,t boot up.

It gets so far then a blue screen pops up and the computer resets itself.

It will then keep on looping through this until I turn it off.

Unfortunately the blue screen is only on for a second so I can't see what it says.

Any idea what's up with it?

Could be hardware fault or a software fault like driver problem, If you can`t get the computer to start at all, first thing i would try is a factory reset.

Thanks James I'm not sure how to do this.

I read that I need a windows installation disk. However it looks like she didn't get one when she bought the laptop

Try this. Turn the laptop on, start pressing the F8 button to access safe mode options and arrow down to highlight disable automatic restart on system failure and hit enter. Then restart the laptop again, this time the blue screen should remain and be given a code. Its possible that it may say up at the top "unmountable boot volume" If so, that means there are errors on the hard drive.

Thanks John I get the following error message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damagebto your computer.

blah blah blah

Technical information:

*** STOP: 0x000000024 (0x00190444, 0x85601A88, 0xC0000102, 0x00000000)

Any idea what this means?

Well just tried using the windows vista disk for my laptop to perform a factory reset. unfortunately my version is 64 bit and girlfriends is 32 bit. :s

That code is related the hard drive. It may be failing or its possible the sata controller setting in the bios has been changed. Do you know what brand of drive it is?

I've got a dell studio 1555. If I plug this bad hard drive in is there any chance it can affect my system in anyway?

Unfortunately all my friends have laptops or steve jobs. I might take it into work tomorrow and ask the IT manager to have a look at it. Thanks for your help today you've been fantastic!

Just found this reference to the error actually. It wouldn't suprise me if this was the case as she's not exactly the most tech savvy person.

'STOP 0x00000024' errors and other critical malfunctions can arise when the Windows operating system becomes overloaded with invalid system references, as well as corrupted and deleted registry files. These problems commonly occur due to a lack of regular PC maintenance. As a computer operating system gets older, errors and crashes start to become more frequent and problematic.
