I Need Help Trying to Make an External HD Bootable

I want to connect my external 500 GB hard drive to my laptop and make it a bootable hd just in case anything happens to my laptop hd. However, I attached it directly to the HD connector on the laptop, and the computer said there is no hd attached. It did recognize it before as an external, and it recognized it after it went back to being an external. Are these big desktop sized hard drives not able to boot up laptops?

The laptop I'm trying to attach it to is a Samsung.

The HD in question is Seagate ST3500320AS
P/N: 9BX154-568
Barracuda 7200.11
500 GB

What exactly would you want to be booting into? Another copy of Windows?

Also, how the hell did you connect a 3.5" drive internally into the laptop as you had described?

Yeah, I'd want it to be a bootable copy of windows in case something happened to the laptop hd.

I took off the black casing from the external hd, and I removed the HD connector. I opened the bottom of the laptop, and it had a fairly lengthy HD connector cord (Samsung Samsung NP300E5C-A09US LAPTOP HDD Hard Drive Connector) and so I connected it that way.
