I need help with installing Windows 7 updates

Every time I open Windows Update and check for updates, it continuously says "checking for updates.." and never find an update. I have had my PC for a few years and it says:

Most recent check for updates: Never
Updates were installed: Never
You receive updates: For windows and other products from Microsoft Update

As you know I need to have my PC updated to the newest update to be able to upgrade for Windows 10 for free, but this is prevented me from doing so as my PC never finds an update when its checking for updates.

Also and my OS is a genuine copy of Windows 7 Service Pack 1.

Does anyone know how to fix this problem or have any suggestions that may fix it?

Help is much appreciated.

How long have you let it check for updates? If its never been updated then it may take a while to collect information needed to tell you what updates are available. Older, slower systems will take even more time. Is there hard drive activity while its checking? Does it ever finish checking for updates?

I've let it sit for long periods of time (currently it has been running for about 2 hours) but i've never got past "checking for updates..." and my pc is definitely not an old pc which it outdated. It has an i5 with 8 GB of ram and a 1 TB HDD with a GTX 750 ti SC.

I've been using the pc while it has been checking for updates but still no result as of yet.

Also i forgot to say that my PC is set to look for updates daily so i don't know why it hasn't been updating
