ive only seen stuff like that when a file is corrupted. if the message was sent to you in an encrypted format why cant the person who sent it to you tell you how to decrypt it?

if your friend has has actually encrypted the text there is no way you can decrypt it unless you know how he did it and you have the password to go with it.
if its a file thats been converted to text it might be possible
