I need to go from W7 back to vista, SAY WHAT?!?!

Ok so I have a decent laptop that is a HP Pavilion dv9000 with 4 gb RAM and A PureVideo HD Nvidia graphics card. A couple of months ago I was watchin a blu ray and my comp over heated and toasted the hard drive. I had a guy put a new hard drive in but he made the new OS Windows 7 32-bit instead of Vista 64-bit. Now I love Windows 7 as much as the next guy but since HP quit making drives for my laptop model at Vista 64-bit I cant use my graphics card and any other custom I have on this laptop. So my question is... is there something I can buy to patch this mess back together? Should I just get a new comp? What about switching it back to Vista and what do I need to go about doing that? Comp stores say they can put vista back on but it will cost $200 so why would I pay some D-bag to push a few buttons on my computer and watch some Star Trek marathon then collect my $200. But I am frustrated enough to think about it.

first i do not think HP made a HD. would have been better to get a recovery disk from HP for windows 7. Couldn't be that much. all the laptops i had there was a recovery disc included which i did make sure of. one price and get it all.

Well, if the guy installed Windows 7 on your computer and you didn't pay an extra $100+ for the software then you can bet it's a counterfeit copy. The good news is that the Windows Vista 32 bit drivers for your computer should work. Also, if you want to go back to a legit copy of Windows Vista 64bit you should be able to order a recovery disc from HP to do so.

Thanks Pohtaytos!

thanks a ton potatos. Im trying to set it as the display but it says windows stopped the use of it because:

Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

I feel like I am close, what do I do now?

This is terrible. I think the problem is with windows Aero? I cant get it to enable so my graphics card can run off of it. I have no idea what I am doing.

Hi Compilliterate,

Sorry to hear about your issues with your DV 9000. I see that one response advised you to run a recovery. If you need a copy of the recovery disks, I will be able to send you a free copy. Please let me know at [email protected].

Windows Aero only has to do with how Windows looks visually, it would not keep you from doing anything, and it's something that you would enable only after the graphics drivers are setup.

Not sure why NVidia's drivers wouldn't work... maybe try installing the Vista 32 bit drivers, often you can get those to work with Win7. Also a free recovery disc isn't a bad deal at all.

Yeah, I think you are right PohTayToes. I think I have exhausted all my resources with tryin it on windows 7. I just suck with computers so I wish I knew what I was doing. Once I put vista back on what do I do? How do I go about getting all the drivers and getting everything running smoothly. I know that Vista is bogged down by unwanted programs so I was curious which ones I need and which ones are just white noise slowin up the machine. Should I just download the drivers from HP? are there other places like NVIDIA and stuff that I should download drivers from too?
