I want to buy a laptop for my aunt who lives far away in a different country so she can do things like send email and skype her family. I have a very low budget, I am a student and I don't want to spend more than $500. What are my options. She is not good with computers at all I just want to get her something that she can use and won't give her trouble. What can I get?

do you want a laptop or desktop, and which website will you buy it from??

I would recommend a desktop, somethinkg within your budget could be a good core 2 duo computer with decent speed and graphical interface. if all she is using is internet, email and skype than it should be best, that is what i bought my grandmother, she only uses skype and email too, so i do not think she needs a super computer. it is fast for what she is doing with it. i bought her a Dell one. 15" screen.

He/She said he/she wanted a laptop , since you can't really build laptops, so try companies that specialise in low-end laptops e.g. Dell, the inspirion 15 (4GB RAM + pentium dual-core) is just $479

:)

well i was suggesting that since it for a person who is most likely not to move it a lot, you would be able to get better deal for your money if you buy a desktop.
sorry fastdude101 for not making myself clear...

Kind of an odd assumption when he stated that he was looking for a laptop.

Probably not when you factor in international shipping.

Now on the the OP's question. From what I've seen, the Dell Vostro series offers the best performance vs. price when you're talking about a budget laptop:

Also, if time isn't too much of an issue, you should just sign up for mailing lists for Newegg, Tigerdirect, Dell, HP, Acer, etc. Every now and then they have great sales on certain models, and you should just wait until you see a good deal on one.
