Newbi here - Ive done a search with no luck. I have a maxtor one touch 120 gb external hard drive. it has about 200 folders on it all with jpg images within them. I just recently tried to access a folder that has about 25 jpg images in it and it gave me a I/O device error. It wont open! I right clicked to check the properties and it says 0 bytes. I found 3 other folders with the same problem. the other 197 folders are fine. For now that is. Is this a folder problem or a hd problem and is there a fix for it.

Have you tried the "error-checking" feature of windows xp? It's not the greatest tool but it might give you an idea if the drive is bad.

Go to My Computer > right click on your drive > properites > tools > error-checking.

Thanks! It worked, I had no idea that it would find fouled up files and fix them. It actually found several bad sectors and retrieved the orphened files. I got every one of my jpg images back.
