I/O device error

Hi,
I have an ACER 5100 series with DVD/CD burner. I have no problem playing DVDs on it, but it will not play any Cds. I try to run the E:// drive but it will say that "E:// drive is not accessible because of I/O device error". I have called Acer and they say that it could be a bad sector and that it will need to be sent in at my cost( even though it is under warranty). Does this seem right? Has anyone had success at fixing an I/O device error? I can't send it in for another 1 1/2 months because I really need my computer.
Thanks for any info!

I know with ACER they are very specific about repairs and I know they will always handle the whole process of booking and doing the repairs. As for the charge, im not sure. Have you got itunes on the laptop?

What do you mean by they handle the booking? I do have itunes on my laptop, but when I put a Cd in to add to itunes, it doesn't do anything. Just doesn't recognize that there's a Cd in there.

Well iTunes has built in drivers to allow direct burning to a drive. Try this as common issue relating to itunes.

go to run

type regedit
then go to find and enter upperfilter

wait for the results , remove upperfilter and lowerfilter.

then re boot the laptop.

I work with laptops and its a very common problem.

Well, it didn't work:( . Other ideas? When I go to My computer, and pick the E drive it says that it is working properly. If Acer is correct and it is a bad sector, I don't understand why it's not something I can fix? Isn't there a scan disk that detects bad sectors and fixes them? I guess I can live with it for a little while. thank goodness my DVD player works. I don't get it. I thought they were both on the same drive. Oh well thanks for the info and I'll take any other advice you're willing to give!:D

Hi again:) I actually have already done a full system restore and it still doesn't work. Maybe I will just have to send it in. thanks for all the tips.
