I think I'm screwed

I bought a new HP Pavilian a1340n computer about 2 years ago. I new I wanted something that I could upgrade later so this seemed like a good fit for me. It had 1.0GB RAM installed and the salesman told me and the box confirmed that it would accept up to 2GB. Now here I am 2 years later and I want to buy another 1GB ram for it. I wasnt sure of the type so I start looking throught my system info and it tells me that my MAX is just 1GB. Tokk the cover off and there is another slot but would it reconize it? No...I don't have the box anymore, but I was sure that it said up to 2GB. I'm assumming that just because I have an extra slot does not mean that it would see it. AM I Screwed???

the number of slots isn't an issue as much as what your mobo will allow in terms of amount because you could still put 2gb in one slot but if your mobo only allows 1gig of ram then that won't work. So you need to figure out what the specs are and if the system can handle more than a gig don't worry about physical space as much as the specs their more important.
 
OK I just "chatted" with HP. They assured me that I could upgrade to 2GB. So can you all tell me what a good price on 1GB ram is? They tried to sell me 1GB for $149.00. That sounded high to me. so I told them no.

I need DDR2-533 (PC2-4200)

I looked at Newegg....they list several different brands....is one brand better than the other?
 
they told me DDR2-533 ( PC2-4200) or DDR2-400 (PC2-3200)

they said that I have the PC2-4200 installed right now.
what is the difference between the two? speed?....which is faster?
 
4200 is faster, you need to get the same speed otherwise the faster stick will downclock to match the slower stick. Whats the exact model of your pc? i can find out if its 184 or 240pin
 
Yeah that would be fine, be sure its 240pin. My HP is a little over a year old and its 184pin, so you might want to look up your model number on Google and should't have any trouble finding it to be 100% sure
