I think my cpu may be too hot?

I checked the uguru utility last night and it said my cpu was around 48-53 C idal, and while playing music it was between 55-64 C.

Thats too hot isnt it? I took off the thermal grease becuase I was going to replace it, which I guess could be causing a problem, but either way, with or without the grease, that just seems to be too hot.

I have 4 fans, 1 80mm exhaust, two 80mm blowing in, and the psu fan which also blows in (i think), do you think any of this should be change around?

Thanks

Your temperatures are a little high for not overclocking but nothing to worry about.
By the way, what processor is it?

i would seriously consider getting thermal paste on there quick... i expect there are hotspots on the cpu which could cause problems later on

I just posted this in another thread... Apply ( ) < that much of Artic Silver 5 in the middle of your CPU, then put on your heatsink. I did this just today and my idle temp droppd 10*C instantly. It should be pretty close to your results as well, I also have an ABIT AV8 and my CPU is an AMD Athlon 64 3500+... Pretty close specs, but I'm also using an aftermarket CPU fan. Anyway, good luck.

As for your technique in applying the thermal grease CBizzle, are you saying just put ( ) that much in the middle of the cpu, and let the heatsinksqash the amount down to spread it, or just spread it my self?

I just let the heatsink spread it out, this way it spreads more evenly across you CPU which will prevent "pockets" for air to be trapped in. In doing this though, you have to be careful not to let your heatsink move, once it touches the thermal grease you can't let it slide or jump off the CPU. This may be easier with your heatsink which im assuming is retail and a block? Mine was the Zalman, which is a circular heatsink and much bigger.

i would disagree with that way of putting on the paste, the best thing to do is to just spread it THINLY with your finger. Just enough to cover the cpu.

In terms of the paste, I realize as i was wiping off some of the old stuff on the cpu, some of it got onto the pin side of the cpu, like on the pins, and between a few. The system seems to work, but I didnt know if this might cause a problem, or even how clean it, little cotton swabs would just cause problems sticking them in there.

Ok, a lil' off topic, but the way I apply thermal paste is by putting it on the HSF first. I get four pieces of stickytape, and make a square size border around the HSF. The area inside would cover the CPU's area. Then I put on the paste and get a credit card, spread it along the HSF going across the stickytape. Then I remove the tape, and I have a very thin layer (the same width of stickytape) of paste. I then just apply the HSF onto the CPU the 'normal' way :P

Is this the wrong way to do it?

On my AMD Athlon XP 2400+ I get temps of about 32*C when in idle. I didn't even use arctic silver...

thanks Rambo, and everyone else, ill put that stuff on and see what happens. More to come later, hopefully the temprature will drop some.

Taking off rhe grease is ok ... as long as u put something on in its place

If it's a 10C drop then there was something seriously wrong with the original configuration.

You can do both (i prefer to spread it myself) but the idea is "dont put too much" ... your target thickness should be 0.1-0.2 mm

Both work reasonably well (otherwise we'd be splitting down between <1C) ... but as for the finger ... skin's oils may interfere ... use a tool for it :)

Excessive amount of work for something thats so simple to do :)
