I thought freezing was a thing of the past

I have a HP Pavilion laptop that I recently purchased a LaCie external hard drive for. Whenever the hard drive is plugged in (through USB) the computer will freeze within 5 minutes whether I am using it or not. It is a complete freeze with no response from any device. There doesn't seem to be any spike in memory use and overheating is not a problem. Any suggestions on what I can do to fix this?
 
Very first of all, make sure you have all the latest drivers and updates on your system. Install SP2 if you haven't already.
