I turned away from PC gaming: My Story

I'm an avid PC user and obviously enjoy the technological side of computing very much; typically gaming, audio and the mechanics of modern computing. However, the other day I made a rash decision to leave it all behind...

I played WoW a fair bit (three level 80's) but always felt like it wasn't constructive at all depsite my enjoying it at those rare times. I also read alot of www.wowdetox.com which helped me arrive at my ultimate desicion. Anyway I was playing on a particular troll-filled night and relised...im just sitting in trade watching people spout giberish while waiting for a raid. The graphics are arsehole, the story is crap and the sound is rubbish. I was simply not enjoying it. I went ahead and sold my account for $250 five minutes after this thought. It was very liberating.

On another note, my computer has been peforming horribley lately depsite being reformatted and cleaned out (only one partition was formatted). Games are running shit on my 9800GTX+ for some obscene reason, my screen is small, my chair is uncomfortable, audio troubles annoying me and much more. I have not been enjoying it at all for a long time.

I put my whole rig up for sale and with the money I made from selling my WoW account I bought an Xbox 360! :)

I currently have my Xbox 360 through some nice 2.1 speakers and will be getting a HDTV soon enough.

Im enjoying the cutting edge technology and simplicity very very much. What are your thoughts?
 
If you like the xbox better, then more power to you. It's actually not as powerful as most gaming PC's, but the overall experience ismuch simpler and IMO easier to enjoy. I like PC games too, but it's nice to able to just stick the disk in and play without worrying about my system playing nice with it.

Of course, on the pc I'm using now(sig), I like the Xbox a lot better...lol.
 
Yeah that's true but the graphics are extremely satisfying and should be even better with HDMI soon.

Btw, I love your pic. I'm creating a mural soon and it's given me some grand ideas.
 
I did the same thing a year ago or so, sold my gaming PC and went to an Xbox 360. I liked it for a while, but it got boring after a few weeks, I enjoy PC gaming more.
 
I can understand what you did. I want to put my foot through my rig at times, but I find keyboard and mouse controls far more accurate. The price difference though for newer games is a pain.
 
i totally get your situation. but for me, the 360 can be fun, but im just so much better with a keyboard and mouse, AND the lack of anti aliasing drives me nuts when i play my friends' 360's on a decent screen. guess my computer days got me totally hating on those jaggies :)
 
Ive actualy been thinking of doing the same thing,I spend way way too much time on the pc gaming...its not good for my health,i think that because im staring at the monitor so much its affecting my eyes as theyre always dry and irritated....then ive got headeach all the time.

Also it uses all my time up,im stupid to let it realy...thats all i want to do is play games all the time....basicly like an addiction.

I want a change of lifetyle anyway,sell my pc to stop me using it.....use the money i get from that for driving lessons and a car...the funds i get from the pc will certianly pay towards lessons and i already have funds for a car.

Then look for a more satiffying job.!

But i totaly see what your talkign about....and i hope all works out for you. :)

In the US you can drive at 15 or16 right? over here in the UK you have to be 17....and the driving test is alot harder + due to them been manual cars....anyone can shove an automatic car into drive and away they go....where as a manual theres a bit more too it :)

I never needed a car from the age of 17-20 ish because i live close to family...worked litraly 5 mins away and shops were the same...so why bother?

But things have changed now so....


Anyway il stop hogging the post and let it go back on topic :D

yeah the test out here is way too easy. but driving manual? thats something that comes with alittle practice, gotta just get out there and do it. my first car was manual, i got my license barely into 16th year. but i guess it wasnt too bad for me, i had been designated driving for friends for a couple years before i got my license, so it kinda came easy
 
I could never commit to 1 or the other (pc vs console) I can only play RTS and FPS on a computer and everything else i prefer on a console (RPG, combat games, sports/racing)
 
PC is my favorite for myself, but there's nothing like getting (inebriated) and playing a console with a bunch of friends. A few months back we got a shitton of drugs and played NES for like 3 days straight. Went through like 10 12pks and a few 2ltrs of pop between the 8 of us. We also made rice krispies by . idk. it was messy. but it was a good time. even on NES and our N64.
 
I visited the website for wow detox and read some of the comments that people left and I kind of agree. Personally, I have never played WoW and never intend to play it. I feel as though it will just consume me and I, too, will become an addict. But then again, the overall activity of playing video games for 20 hours a week gets to be pretty depressing too only because, you miss out on greater opportunities in life. I'm not saying to stop playing in general, just limit your self to 4 or 5 hours a week or even less. Its better to just go out and hang out with friends than sitting around countless numbers of hours at home playing video games which are getting you no where in life.
 
Yeah I agre with you completely Midnight. I have discovered I enjoy the technological side of it much more than the actual gaming. I love setting up 5.1 Audio and getting a crisp HDMI picture you know. The gaming is just an extra tbh.

That seems like substituting gaming for socialising, which isn't a whole lot better really.

You an sit tehre talking to people that you don't know doing nothing, or sit there talking to people that you do know doing nothing?

Surely something "more constructive" would be going getting fit physically and mentally, go do some exercise and studying, that would be "constructive" time.

But then again, what IS "constructive" time? The way I see it, so long as you are capable of carrying on how you are and are enoying yourself, it is time well spent. You can try and do things to prolong your life, but lets be fair, we are all dieing anyway, may aswell get quality time over quantity, so live how you enjoy living, if that is sat infront of a computer or playing with computers for hours each day, go for it, I envy you for finding something that you truely enjoy doing wholeheartedly!!

I must admit though, I am also envious of people who say stuff like OP, because I truely don't know what to do with myself outside of my little routine of coming in, firing the computer up, playing for a bit, maybe go out for a bit (not in winter, too dark, wet and cold :P), maybe watch a film or 2, maybe listen to some music, go to bed, go to college, rinse and repeat. It gets stale after a while and don't know where to go. Although I enjoy my computer and the time spent on it, at times I want to put my foot through it, I get bored of it or just wish I didn't have it, so I suppose that sort of makes my "the way I see it" in the last paragraph a little hypocritical :P

Well, what I'm trying to say is that you shouldn't just hang out with your friends to socialize with them and that's all. I mean, go do something with your friends like take a road trip or something like that for example. Some people that I talk to say that they haven't gone to college and all they do is sit around at home and do nothing. Why not go to college, earn yourself a degree maybe and get a job at what you like doing best, even if your job is to be a game designer. But I try to encourage myself to go outside more often and skateboard for example with my friends. I find more excitement in skateboarding for 6 hours during the day then sitting slumped over at home for 6 hours playing video games.

The first time that I bought a game off Steam, I thought, "Oh this is pretty easy." But now I have bought about $400 worth of games and now that I think about it, I wish I could have used that money to go to California for example.
 
I read the first post and a few below it, so I don't know what everyone else said. But it's time like these I'm glad I can play games on the PC (WoW and FPS), as well as on the 360 as well. I love WoW, I am by no means addicted to it, and when I see people who are addicted to it, it makes me think that it's their problem, not the game. But I won't get into this now.

You should love the 360, it's amazing. MW2, Ao2:40th Day, and Halo 3 are all amazing with their graphics and are truly amazing with 5.1.


On a semi related note, when's the release date roughly for Cataclysm?
 
wow isnt the only pc game.
a 9800GTX+ can make games look a hell of alot better then an xbox360.
you could have used your nice speakers with your pc.
theres nothing cutting edge about an xbox.

that said, im proud a fellow cfer put their wow addiction behind them
 
I definitely understand what you're saying. For me, I sort of game in waves. Ill do 20+ in one week then not even touch a game the entire next week.

I think i might have to drop the gaming when I go to college though, we'll see. It will depend on where I go. I'll probably try to pick up an xbox though if the PC doesn't go to school with me...
