I wanna have a cd/dvd burner drive to play the occasional game and dvd here and there. I don't want driver problems or b.s. issues like that...

Can anyone post some drives they have had a good experience with in the 20 dollar range.

If twenty dollars is unrealistic than what should i spend
 
Does the slot on your mobo look like this (SATA)...

If you have both, use SATA.

if you have vista, use vlite to slipstream that hotfix in, theres one you need or else vista setup wont run from a sata drive, which would be a problem in case you need to reinstall.
 
unless you got bluray, you wont use the extra speed sata gives you, i dont think

sata cables are neater for airflow though

Do you mean XP? I know some XP Pre SP2 disks require SATA drivers, but I believe Vista supports SATA out of the box.

SP2 still needs it if you have full sata, a sata pci card or sata raid

most machines can be switched (in fact most are out of the box) from full sata to IDE emulation mode, so they work on older OSes

it supports SATA hard drives, but theres a small bug in booting from SATA dvd drives

newer dell dimension pcs (~6 months ago) - (which only have SATA) - have this slipstreamed into the os disc already, conveniently.

Serial Advanced Technology Attachment (SATA) optical drives, such as a CD or a DVD drive, may not be available after you start a Windows Vista-based computer.

This problem may occur if the computer uses an Advanced Host Controller Interface (AHCI) chipset. The problem does not occur if the AHCI chipset uses Parallel Advanced Technology Attachment (PATA) emulation mode.

To work around this problem, enable PATA emulation in the system BIOS. Contact the manufacturer of your hardware for more information about how to do this
