Actually, I dont. I just want to a decent computer.

I decided that it was time for my Sony PCV-RS720G to get a cosmetic and internal make-up. I decided that I want to:
-Up the RAM to around 2 GB, or at least 1GB

-Get a better cooling fans/system, at least the processor fan needs to go and burn in hell since it is making some seriously disturbing noise.

- Get a better video card

Here is my stats, I have no idea what kind of stuff to buy since they are all socket this socket that and all that fancy terms.....

and I am a student, so I want to get the most out of my percious money.....

And thanks a lot guys.....:D

Well its a P4 3Ghz, so its gonna be loud. Your best bet would be to open it up and clean out all the dust, and apply some new thermal paste.

As for the video, it doesnt say if you have an available AGP or PCI-E slot, so if you can find that out it will help alot.

I would also upgrade to at least 1GB of RAM.

Hmm seems like we've got a decent platform to work with ... whats you'r budget? :)

Well, I guess as cheap as possible? I have no idea how much RAM, video card are going to cost me though.

I mean I tried everything, from resetting the BIOS to paste to noise damper to petting it, nothing works, it was really quiet when I first bought it, but it deteriorated.

How would I find that? Open the case?

Thats my problem .. but i need to know how much money you have to play with. Different people have different definitions for "affordable"

Ya that happens.

how would i find that? open the case?
see QUESTIONS 101.

Hmm, I guess around $250 is fine for me with the RAMs, Video Card, and the processor fan. I can go a little more but I dont think beyond $300. I believe the graphic card is AGP. Of course, if all of them doesn't take all the money, that be great. :D

And the main thing I really care about is the fan. I would like a super quiet and long lasting fan that will make as little noise as possible. And of course, I want a little more RAM too.

Thanks a bunch guys. :D

believe the graphic card is AGP.
Can u check? See Questions 101 I would expect PCIE

- Rosewill 2x512MB [CL3, $67.49]
- Arctic Cooling Freezer7Pro [$34.99]
Subtotal = $102.48

Some videocard options
- X700 Pro [$94]. Given the cost of the X800Pro, i wouldnt really consider this unless budget was really an issue
- X800Pro [$110 after $30MIR)... arguably best value here
- X1600Pro 512MB for the price delta between the lowest priced 256MB model and this, the 512Mb is a better buy
- X1600XT [$165] you take away 256MB advantage to the previous card but this baby has a higher clock, supports Crossfire and with an exhaust based cooler, the heat from the videocard wont contribute to the system temp
- 6800GS [$190] heavy hitter here, this card is essentially a highly overclocked 6800 with performance levels on the heels of the 6800GT/X800XL

his compy looks like socket 478, and i am pretty sure they do not make socket 478 boards with pci-e. if you can show me one, tell me a place to buy it:D
everything praetor suggested looks good, but i would suggest not geting two pieces of 512mb ram because his mobo only supports two and he has one already. disregard what i just said if you need a matched pair, as i'm not really sure:o

The link he showed says the chipset is Intel 915G which is a skt775 chipset. Also Intel 915G is a chipset that comes with PCI-E. My guess is this is the reason why Praetor said he would expect pci-e.

Thanks a lot people

Hmm, I am kind dumb, is there some kind of tool kit I should be buying along with the stuff? like special screw drivers...etc...

normal phillips is all you really need. you might want needlenose pliers but that not needed. otherwise, nothing is really needed

please help, if i buy all the parts, how will i install them?
by reading the motherboard manual. that usually outliens all you need to do. also have a look at Building Computers 101
