Yep... the one I have is starting to give me troubles.

I know a bit about computers but not enough to mix and match the build setup.

* PC Case: Looking for simple looking all black case, lots of fan openings and space
* Floppy Disk Drive: Got one.
* Hard Drive: Looking for reliability for a good price.
* CD-ROM Drive: Got one.
* Processor: AMD Athlon 64 (Looking for 3GHZ+)
* Processor Cooling Fan: Not familiar
* Motherboard: Looking for 4 ram slots, not familiar
* Memory Modules: Will depend on the mother board
* Power Supply: Not familiar, but I have one. (310W ATX 2 fan)
* Video Card: 256 MB ATI Radeon X1550
* Keyboard & Mouse: Just looking for a black cordless keyboard with lots of buttons

Thanks for the help.

Bad parts, you won't need a CD-ROM nowdays with the DVD-ROMS and DVD burners.

Tell us your budget and we might offer you some suggestions on the parts according to your budget

Well I already have an external DVD and I'm not putting more into that.
My budget is around 500-600 CAD. I'm also looking into a AMD Athlon X2 3800 2.0 GHZ so forget the single core 3.0+ GHZ.

Yeah, an Intel Core 2 Duo is the best CPU to buy at the moment, an E6300 is best for the value, it's cheaper and you can overclock it to get better performance. Not like you'd need it anyway :P

Well... he could get an E6300, a decent mobo and GPU, and then use the parts from his old computer, until he can save to upgrade one part at a time.

They dont make a 3Ghz A64 (yet). But as others suggested, get a Core 2 Duo.

The x1550 is a decent card, but I would not go any lower then the x1600XT or the 7600GS.

to build I suggest you have a look at http://www.directcanada.com they have great prices.

Someone will have to check this to be sure that it all works together.

116.83

Total 670.88 without DVD drive, without video card as it appears you already got one and without keyboard and mouse. maybe someone will correct me, but I believe the power supply included in the Antec case should be alright for this computer, but if you increase components too much, it would be a good idea to get a better one.

You could also reduce the price by 21.39 getting an E4300 instead of the E6300. You could also wait for the "price drops" on intel processors which should occur sometime later this month.

Edit: btw Styrak, I believe he meant that 240 or perhaps 250 is half of his 500$ budget.

What about the AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200 DC? That's 2.2GHZ... yeah forget 3.0 I didn't do my homework on that.

Plus I can get one for $146.05 CAD... but I might just get a 4600 because it's 20$ more for 2.4GHZ. (Socket 940)

What motherboard supports the 4600? I need 4 slots of possible.

I am not really knowledgeable with AMD computers, so I'll just post what I think could be interesting.

Processor: Athlon 64 X2 4600+ http://www.directcanada.com/products/?sku=10360BD5358&vpn=ADO4600CUBOX&manufacture=AMD

112.75

Total 561.35 with the same limitations as I previously mentionned. Take in consideration that I have never really looked into AMD

Thanks a lot.

Although I don't think that the mother board will work because AMD is AGP and not PCI.

Really? PCI is now compatible with AMD? That's awesome... changes my choices completly and also my graphic card.

Thanks.
