Hi all

My hard drive has become riddled with trojans and viruses and I have decided to upgarde my operating system anyway so thought why not just wipe and start again.

Is it as easy as it sounds? I have all the drivers for my sounds card etc on disk and I have all my other programs like offices, photoshop etc.

Will erasing my hard drive get rid of the trojans and viruses and does anyone have any useful links for how to do it. I don;t have any irreplaceable work on my computer so I am not bothered about losing anything. As long as the sound and everything still works once it is all clean.

Oh at present I can't connect to the internet and I don't have access to a CD RW drive at present so am not able to download any discs to do it for me.

Thanks

I forgot to mention, I am currently running windows 98 (factory installed so I don't have a disc) and want to change it to XP (original and authentic pack obtained)

Do I not have to wipe the hard drive first in order to get rid of the viruses? I have some in my documents which will be saved if I just install XP over 98

You can do wipe it out if you go into my computer and right click on the drive you want to format and it will have a button which says format. or you can just install XP straight over the older partition, or create a new partion on the drive to install XP on. The easiest way to do it was to do as kof2000 said and just pop it in and im pretty sure you can prompt it to delete everything.

Boot off 98 startup disk, choose option 4.Exit This will take you to a A> prompt. type format c: This will completely wipe the drive clean. After format completes remove disk and use ctl + alt + del to reboot. Enter the bios setup and check to see if the CD drive is the first boot device. If not then change it. Put in XP disk and escape out of setup saving changes. Computer will boot off XP disk. Then do a clean install. No more virus and a fresh copy of XP.
