I was bored yesterday and thought up of something...Why can't manufacturers make one standard socket type for every processor out there? Wouldn't it be so much easier! And the socket should be made for the best cpu it can handle and the other ones below it should just not utilize the extra pins. Probably it can't be done but anyone else agree?

its an economic issue. if you want to upgrade your processor of different socket, then it forces you to buy a whole new motherboard and all the chipset makers profit from this. kind of like how intel kept pushing their processors 100 mhz at a time and jacking up the prices.

Yup

There is one more reason for that. Suppose that a standard would be set with socket type with 1000 pins and make all processors fit them. What that would mean is that the different CPU manufacturers would have to limit their development to that amount of pins for a period of time. However, competitivness would diminish and so would the profits of the PC component manufacturers. Essentially, this would slow down development.

JAN :D

Because someone is gonna make a better socket.
