I have a mobility m10 graphics card (radeon 9600 wih 64mb ram) for my laptop and I was wandering how much better the nvidia 8400gs (with 512 mb of ram) would be (i know its a low profile card) because I was thinking of purchasing one ( the best PCI card I can find, I dont have a PCI-e slot). And also will I be able to play most games from 2005 and below at a good setting with descent Frame rates?

The 8400gs (PCI) would be an upgrade for my desktop guys..

Im talking about intalling the nvidia 8400gs in my desktop. I currently have a laptop with the mobility m10(9600) graphics card, and im using the laptop to play my games. All I wanted to know is how much better the 8400gs than a radeon 9600 (mobility m10). Sorry if I was not too clear with my question.

OH and I am only playing older games like AOE, Call of duty 1 and 2, half-life2, etc...
 
Well I have a friend who has an 8400GS in his desktop. As long as you stick to old games like the ones you mentioned you should be fine. HL2 especially no problem, I was able to run that on my integrated graphics.

This is your 9600 vs an 8400GS. The 8400GS is definitely better. It will not run many of the current games, but should be fine on the games you mentioned.

Thanks alot for the reply, yeah I wasent expecting the 8400gs to play modern games (especially at 1920x1200 res with x16 AA lol) but it sure beats my intergrated card (intel extreme 2). The card I know will be a huge improvement compared to what I have now, and since you said the performance was much better I might be able to play some games I wasent able to play before :D

It basically goes into your computer, assesses your hardware, and tells you if you can play a game or not. It's safe and stuff, just in case you were interested.

Thanks alot I have been using the systemrequiremnts for a while yeah it is very helpful especially if you are not sure how well the game will perform on your computer.

Oh and just incase you were wandering here is my system specs:
Intel pentium 4 HT (rated @ 4.5 GHz)
1gig ddr ram
the intergrated card (hopefully upgraded)
and 160 gig HDD
250watt psu (looking to upgrade to at least a 350watt psu)
As u can see this computer is very old (dell dimension 3000) and even if I had a card like the 9800gt (donno how its possible) on this comp I wouldnt be able to play modern games at high settings, or even play them at all.

Haha you're welcome. I just checked the requirements on the 8400GS, should be good with a 300W but a 350W would be better, to give you more headroom. And I would look into adding at least another gig of RAM but that's another story. Haha glad I could help!
 
You need 26A minimum on 12V rail (28A is recommended) regardless of the wattage. A 8400 is a piece of shit, get a 7 series if your budget is tight, as this will be much better.
