i5 and i7...

yesterday, my brother said that he was talking to a 'computer proffesional' thand that 'proffesional' said that the intel i5 is better and preforms greater in laptops than the i7 in laptops... is this really true? i want to et an i7 in a laptop but not if this is true...
 
I believe it all depends on which particular Cpu you were looking at. a low end i7 compared to a high end i5 of course the i5 will win.either way you go, they are both great products but on two similar cpus, the i7 is better. Of course it's not the Cpu by itself that makes a killer computer
 
It really depends on which model I5 and which I7. Some I7's are not even quad cores. The I7's that are quads have very low clock speeds like 1.6ghz. The I5's have like 2.5ghz. For most things you do on a laptop, a 2.5ghz dual core is going to outperform a 1.6ghz quad. So I tend to agree with him. Plus, the I5 consumes less energy so the battery lasts longer as well.
 
but if that laptop was to put to the test by playing some of the newer games, would the quad core outperform?

also in a laptop you guys are just comparing it to a low end I7. what about the higher ones like the 740QM up to the 940XM?
 
99% of the time, the laptop graphics are not enough to play the games an I5 is capable of playing.
Very few games will play better on an I7 quad over an I5 dual core. The I5 still has hyperthreading, so it may only be a dual core but it has 4 threads like a quad.

The 940xm is the only one thats gonna be a good bit better, because the turbo clockspeed on that one is 3.33ghz. But again, probably not worth the extra money you'd have to pay to get a laptop with one, AND not worth the extra battery drain the I7 gives over the I5.
 
yep leave gaming to desktops. There are very few laptops that could handle games well, and for the price that you would pay for one of those you could have built yourself a really good gaming desktop.
 
ok thanks for the advice dude. but is the i7 extereme edition the only prossesor that can handle the newest games on high graphics? a 1k prossesor isnt my kind of thing if you know what i mean.... (all i want to do is play games, and games only)
 
the 980X is way overkill for games. I would recommend any quad core for gaming. What really matters is how powerful your graphics card is. The integrated gpu's in laptops don't have the power for games even though the cpu's probably do. That's why we recommend desktops for gaming. You can upgrade the gpu for better performance.
 
I would get a Phenom II 955 quad core, with a good AM3 890 board.

When it comes to gaming, the 955 is probably THE best bang for the buck.

You want to get a real good board so it lasts awhile and is upgradeable, so-

That should leave you a good bit left for a decent graphics card. I would normally recommend a Nvidia gtx460, but with AMD setups I'd go for a 5850 so you have the future upgradeability to crossfire two of them. AMD chipsets don't do Nvidia's SLI.
