i5 or i7?

I can buy an i7 3770K for $210 then the next one up is a hundred dollars more so I don't understand this? An i5 4670K is $235 and then the 4690 is about $225 so is the 4690 a more powerful CPU than the 4670K because I'm not going to over clock it I guess? What should I buy?

i5 is the best deal

I think that for what you get the i5 4690 would be my best bet vs. an i7 which is a hundred dollars more and I'm pretty much an average user and I like to play games sometimes so an i7 might just throwing money away? Over clocking an i5 4690 might be for ego vs. what I need? Also isn't the i5 4690 the top of the line for the i5? Also should I watch out for the 4690S, 4690T, and 4690 because I don't want to buy something I think I'm getting only to get something completely different and that is why I'm posting these questions?

Average user means just web surfing, email, facebook, online games. If you are that type of user then no need to get a high end processor. A decent quad core is more than enough.

Lots of people need/want an i7. It doesn't matter if the games are offline or online, unless you're talking about web-based games, in which case an i5 is overkill.

I see you bought an i7, Why? Also what are you using 32 GB of RAM for? Are you using the AMD HD 7970 3GB for games? I'm just trying to get a hold on what people are using their system for?

Yes, I'm using it for gaming and photo editing most likely. I edit batches of several hundred to a thousand RAW photos, which take up 8-16GB of RAM on their own depending on how many photos are in each batch. I have a 27" monitor running at 2560x1440, so I need a high end system to play games at that resolution on the highest settings.

By 100 dollars more you're referring to the 4770K right?

If you can buy a 3770K for $210 then that is the best buy by far. It is very similar to a 4770K. You never know what your future needs may be, and certainly you don't want to be trying to get a hard to find CPU later.

We also need to be careful. The 4690 is a different socket to the 3770k. So check.

The 3770K is significantly faster, uses less power, has a bigger memory cache, twice as many threads and is the cheapest, i would go for that, unless you intend to rely on the integrated GPU, however be mindful of the difference in the sockets.
