Hey everyone, just a quick noob question here.
I'm looking at two processors but a bit unsure of which to go for.

Its the i5 380 3.6ghz and the i7 870 2.93ghz.

Now I understand that obviously the i7 is the range up so has more features and capabilities, however, I am thrown by the 2.93 vrs the 3.6ghz. It seems a big difference. I suppose my main question is, which is more powerful. Will i get a better performance from one over the other?

Thanks :)

i think you're a bit confused because the only intel cpu in the core family with 380 in it is the core i3 380m, and its a mobile cpu and the core i7 870 is a desktop cpu, the i7 has more cores than the i3 and a total of 8 threads, the i5 has four cores but only 4 threads.

Is this the cpu, or am i mistaken because i cant seem to find a desktop variant named core i5 380

I believe he means I5 680, which is just a clarksdale dual core with 4 threads.

Yourdirector- The I7 is WAY better in this case because it has 2 more cores and 4 more threads.

I *think* that the 870 is the same phsyically as the 860 just with a slight overclock, and I can hit 3.6GHz easily with my 860, but you'll need to replace intels stock cooler or else it'll just fry.

Unless you already have the 1156 board and are just replacing the CPU, you should check out the new sandy bridge 1155 socket processors, they certainly beat the original i5/i7 series, both in performance and price.
i5 2500k
