i7 vs i5, frequency question

Hello everyone! It's good to meet you all. :)
I suppose it wouldn't hurt to inform the forum that I shamelessly registered for the first forum that I Googled, and it seems you guys/gals are a decent lot. :D

Anyway, straight to the point I guess.
I'm searching for a gaming laptop at the moment, more or less specifically for the upcoming MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. (Which will be available for PS3, but I was planning on purchasing a laptop anyway.)

I came across the ASUS G51Jx and it seems like a good candidate for a gaming and all-around-useful laptop that could last me a while.

I came across something that puzzled me, however. Under the recommended specs of the game, it includes a Core i7 processor with 2.66GHz frequency. However, most Core i7 processors I have seen contribute a frequency of about 1.6GHz. Is this really better when comparing to a Core i5 processor with a frequency of about 2.5GHz?

Here are the system requirements for the game, as well as the ASUS G51Jx specs. The numbers likely speak better than I would.

Thanks a lot in advance.

Hi Fishecrator welcome to the forums!

The thing you have to remember here is that i5/i7's in laptops are underclocked and under powered as they need to run off a battery and use less powerful components to what a desktop uses. a desktop I7 920 (popular I7 processor) for example runs at stock on a desktop of 2.66 Ghz across all 4 cores. On a laptop this is much lower between 1-2 ghz. Therefore if you are looking at gaming is there any chance we can talk you into building a desktop?

Thanks Hsv_Man. And thanks for the quick response.

Well, in my case, I think I would be better off with a laptop, since I am a college student and often find myself in need of a faster, more efficient laptop (Mine now takes about 10 minutes just to start up). I also have a PS3 at home, and am more of a console gamer. Final Fantasy XIV will probably be one of the few PC games I'll play.

Do you think a laptop would really be that lacking in terms of gaming efficiency? If that's the case, I may just stick to my PS3 and buy a non-gaming laptop.

Yeah I think if you wanted a true gaming laptop the cost you would be looking at would be very high and for that price you could be spending it on other things. I have a PS3 aswell they go alright might be best to stick to that and get Final Fantasy XIV on PS3 and just buy a nice speedy laptop for college. :)
