IBM DVD read error.

ok, so i recently bought an IBM thinkpad, with windows XP Pro. I like how the laptop works, but i need some help with the dvd drive.
The drive says "CD-RW DVD ROM" on it and it has the program of Power DVD installed, so that leads me to believe that it played at one time.
The problem is when i put a dvd in the drive (tried several that played on the tv's dvd player so its not the disk), it does nothing. I hear it spinning, but the computer does not acknowlege that there is a disk in drive.
I have played several video games on it, all from CD's, so the drive is reading.

btw, thanks for you all's help.

Try some other disks and confirm the drive functions correctly and fully. There are time a drive can fail and stop reading certain types of disks. Perhaps that one no longer can read DVDs. Oh, and of course confirm you're opening the disk correctly (IE not relying on autoplay and such) Does anything show up under My Computer?

no, it does not show up under the my computer.
I have tried other disk, as that was in the origional post. It plays CD's and will write to CD, but it isnt reading DVD.
Is this something that is very expensive to fix??
