IBM Thinkpad fan replacement help needed

Perfessor

I can buy the fan locally for $22. The cheapest price I have for the work of replacing the fan is $75 to start or a firm $150. I heard this sin't really hard to do. Has anyone done this that can help me?

Is it the main fan like that goes onto your processor and everything? Its not hard but you would need to ensure you had all the necessary heatsink gel and everything to put on there after you took the old one off as must laptops i have worked on the fan sits on the processor under the keyboard...

you can replace it yourself.. just make sure you dont fry the components by beeing staticle charged, and make sure you remember how everything is put together :)
I threw my Compaq V300 appart several times now, and its still running =)

Is this local fan made specifically for the laptop? I know some have odd wireing and places to screw them down... Rarely they're your average 80mm fan or anything :P

The fan is from thinkpad.parts.com. I don't know about heatsink gel. It does have a heatsink that's attached to the fan.

Yes most labtop fans sit directly on top of the processor get some gel you will need it to do the job right. Also take pics as you take things out. There are lots of little screws and its hard to remember where they all go and very easy to get sidetracked and forget one or where it goes...
