IBM Thinkpad T41 will not boot up

First off, hello everyone - this is my first post on this website. I was sent here by a friend on high recommendation so I hope you guys can help!

I have a fairly old IBM Thinkpad T41 that I use as a backup computer - but recently it seems to have died.

When I turn it on, I get the IBM logo, then nothing. The screen just goes black and it doesn't do anything. I can get in to the "Access IBM" menu, but I can't access "safe mode" from there. When I press F8 repeatedly to try and get the Safe Mode menu to appear nothing happens.

I can however get the option to "boot from external device", so can I make it work using that feature somehow?

Any help getting it up and running would be greatly appreciated!

The laptop is running on Windows XP Professional, if that is any use to you at all.

do you have the Hard drive listed in the boot options? Could be a simple HDD failure, or easier yet, the hard drive could have came loose, thus not having a connection.

Unfortunately, I can't even get into that men any more! It just turns on, and the screen goes black. Occasionally it will come up with the first menu, and then the screen will go black again.

Does it sound like it is probably dead?
