IBM vs Sony.....Which Laptop Do I Save ?

i have an IBM T40 and from my research there is a common problem with the video adapter or something.....as a result i need to replace the motherboard....

i also have a sony VAIO PCG-9S1L that needs a new screen/monitor....

which one of these would be best to spend the money on?....from my research the parts will cost pretty much the same....doing the work is not a problem i can do both repairs myself....

it will just be used for basic home use....internet and gaming....

which is the better computer to save ?
 
neither, it is more cost effective to invest in a new laptop. Motherboard will run you probably $400 and screen probably over $500 and that is if you decide to do the work yourself.

I'd say take the money you would spend on repairing and invest it in a new laptop.
 
You can find decent laptops for pretty cheap now. I'm with tlarkin, just invest in something new. At the shop, motherboard replacements usually run around $250 excluding labor. Monitors around $150. Throw $500 down and you'll get a fair laptop that "should" be problem free... (not to say I haven't seen some practically new laptops in the shop).

im a bit :confused:

i can get a motherboard on ebay for 80-100 bucks and the monitor pretty much the same....(motherboard refurbished but guaranteed working and the monitor brand new)....not sure where you are getting your prices from....thanks anyway....

I was a warranty tech for many years at a company that did repairs for consumers and businesses. Out of warranty laptops generally have fixed tiered rates these days. In fact, when I left working there nearly 6 years ago, they were using flat rates.

I was quoting you what it would cost if you took it somewhere to get fixed. Anyway, it is still not really worth to invest any money in either laptop. When I Google the specs for that IBM, it says it is using a Pentium M processor, which is what, 2 generations ago? 3? Depends if you count the core duo and core 2 duo same gen chip?

You can go pick up a C2D notebook for under $500 which would be: 1) Brand new, 2) have a full warranty and 3) out perform that laptop you currently have.

id rather save the 400 bucks really....so my back to my original question...which is the better machine to spend the money on?

i dont really care about the processor speed....im only using it for basic internet surfing, emailing and maybe some light video games....basic home use....all that will be on the hard drive is windows....

It's give and take. Sony parts are almost always expensive compared to most other laptops. I still say cut your losses and buy a new laptop.
