Icons Disappear on start up

I've had this happening other times but usually after a restart [by pressing the Reset Button], when logging into Windows, everything would go back to normal.
Today, this isn't happening. After a few restarts, everything on Windows has disappeared - no icons, no Start menu...and so on.

I'm sure this is a common problem.
I was thinking about giving a scan because probably there might be a virus, but before I do that, is there any other solution I could try?

Now I'm working with Device Manager.

I already sent you an e-mail with an answer why this could be happening. It seems like the "explorer.exe" is not starting on the Windows startup. The "explorer.exe" file from the WINDOWS folder is a small program which is designed to show all these things ---> icons,Windows taskbar and so on...All you have to do is to open the Task Manager,go to FILE -> NEW TASK (RUN...) and in there write "explorer.exe" and then click the OK button. If this problem is happening on every Windows startup, then simply make the shortcut of the "explorer.exe" in the STARTUP folder. The location of the "explorer.exe" file is:

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe

The location for the STARTUP folder is:

C:\Documents and Settings\YOUR USER NAME\Start Menu\Programs\Startup\

Cheers!

edit: I actually pressed F8 and entered the Safe Mode. -- the strange thing is that even in SM the desktop was without icons and the startbar.
it was like in Windows except that the background was black. I was expecting the Windows system in SM to work correctly.
Even in SM I had to work with Task Manager...

isnt' that strange?

what you could try is to kill the explorer exe in task manager first, then relaunch it in task manager again by file ... new task/run and type in explorer.exe
