i just realised that i my old hard drive was a IDE im not too sure but because new one is SATA will that mean i cant add the older one to my new pc?!?

If your computer only hase IDE ports and no SATA ports (very common with PC's more then a few years old), then no it will not work. What you can do is buy a SATA add-on card.

my problem seems to be the other way round lol i have SATA but dont think i have IDE my motherboard is a ASUS P5N-E SLI

Oh wait LOL i think it does have two IDE ports...the pri_IDE is used for the dvd-rw so do i just stick the hard drive on the sec_ide port and it will pick it up?

Ahh after a few cuts and swear words later i got the hd in from my old machine...its got all my info on there just a thought as that already had xp installed is there a way of just booting it up staright at start? Or will i have to do a fresh install on it?

You won't be able to boot into the OS because the hard drive is in a different computer.
