ide cable

hey guys, it is me again with another question. I bought a usb to ide cable to transfer the info from my old hard drive to my new but I have a few questions:

the holes on the cable port look like they match but I am having a hard time getting them connected. I'm afraid to push too hard for fear I'll bend the little prongs-any tips?

Also, the directions say to make sure the 'device' is in master mode--what does that mean and how do I get there? is it like getting into safe mode? I have windows vista.

I would appreciate any advice.thanks

Be sure there's no key some cables have keys, some don't (key on the top, and a filled hole). If the cable has all the holes, it's probably just a stiff cable.

The master/slave settings are all on the drive itself. Most all drives should have instructions printed on the drive.
