IDE channel question

I have a SATA HDD, but my optical is IDE. Which channel should I put the cable in? (1 or 2, thers no 0) Do the jumper slave and master settings matter? I only have 1 optical. Should I use the middle conecter or the one on the end? Does it matter which end goes where?
 
put the Optical on the end connector of either channel. Doesn't really matter if those are your only 2 drives, but standard convention says channel 1. Leave it on cable select or set it to master. Choice is up to you. Master/Slave is channel relative, so by setting it to master and/or putting it on the master plug (last one) on the cord, it will run as such.
