2 drives that are equal except 1 is PATA and the other is SATA will perform equally. A new SATA drive is faster than an old PATA though. The big thing is the SATA cables are a lot better to work with than the old fat ribbons and new motherboards generally only have 1 PATA port instead of 2.
Generally the trend seen now even with optical drives is towards sata. Without the wide grey colored flat ribbon type cable you also see an increase in overall air flow as well as not seeing hassles having a drive's jumper set incorrectly for the position of the cable it is on.
There are some excellent round cables while seeing quite a price between retail tags and shipping. Generally you order online from a retail store for the better ones and avoid the garbage cables also sold. Try $14.95 just for shipping one round cable! That was seen for an Antec Cobra ide cable with dual nylon wrapping retailing for the same price at times.
The drives that tend to actually outperform both ide and the typical sata models are the WD Raptors seeing a 10,000rpm over the average 7,200 for sata and 5,400-7,200 depending on age for ide. Gamers go for those as the OS drive while using any other for storage.
