IDE question

Hi, my uncle just recently bought a new motherboard etc. for a friend. I'm not 100% sure on the details, but this is how he explained it to me:
It's a Gigabyte GA-8I945P-G Motherboard, it contains 3 IDE ports, seperated into 2 blue ports and a red port i think? The two blue ports were specified in the manual to be only for HDD's. He attempted to plug in a CD-ROM drive.. and a 80 gig IDE hdd into these ports. When he plugged the cd rom drive into the red port, and the hdd into the red port. the hdd wouldnt be recognised. Something about activating the RAID, it detected the hdd, but a blue screen error came up. He said that he could always plug in both the hdd and cd-rom into the red port. but his friend had another dvd drive and most likely wouldnt be detected on the blue ports. Sorry if this sounds confusing, i havent seen it, and i have a pretty old motherboard so i dont have a clue what it looks like. Any help would be appreciated =]

I don't know about mobo's but you say that 2 blue ones are only for hdd's
and the red one is for the cd-rom only? is that rigth?
If that so tell him to put the hdd on the blue side then the cd-rom in the red side with diffrent ide cables
Your confusing is it sata or ide? Cause you did mention a raid card
another option is to mess with the jumper in the back off the hdd
or reformat it dunno but ill would try all of those if my computer was wrong in that situation
and to other menbers of this forum I migth not have experience but I want to help i undestand how it feels to have no help so it's just options
no harm done if he don't try :) lil time everyone has it took me 25 hours to get my first computer running and guess what it was hdd jumper

Hmm nah, i think he said the ide's were seperated into two sections. One section containing TWO blue ide's next to the sata ports? and ONE red ide next to the floppy drive port.

It's IDE, sorry if im being confusing...as i said i didnt really get 100% of what he was saying.

he tried plugging in the drives the other way around and every time he did the ones in the blue ports wouldnt be detected. he's tried jumpers and stuff, im pretty sure he's alright with those jumper problems since he's done older computers before.
i dont think it would a reformat problem, cos the hdd worked on a higher model gigabyte motherboard.
thanks for the reply =]

dont go thinking RAID is confined to SATA drives... IDE RAID is not uncommon

right, the two blue IDE ports are most probably for use if you are plannin on having a RAID config set up, you dont have this (as fas i can tell from what you said) so try NOT to use the blue ones at all for any type of drive. use the RED channel for both the HDD AND THE CD-ROM DRIVE. You may also want to check that the HDD has its jumper set to the right setting. MASTER / SLAVE etc... if you are unsure or cant get it to work, try putting the jumper to "CS" or cable select, the drive will then configure itself with its position on the IDE cable...

so yeh, cut out the blue ports alltogether, i do not believ they are for conventional use unless you fiddle with the BIOS to turn RAID off, but lets keep it simple and confine your drives to the red port for now...
